Jesus Earned Godhood

-Jesus earned godhood

"Jesus became a God and reached His great state of understanding through consistent effort and continuous obedience to all the Gospel truths and universal laws." The Gospel Through the Ages; Deseret Book Co. 1945, p.51

"Jesus Christ the same yesterday, today and forever." Heb 13:8

"I am the Lord, I changeth not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed." Malachi 3:6

-Jesus attained status

"Christ the Word, the First born, had of course attained unto the status of Godhood while yet in pre-existence." What the Mormons Think of Christ; LDS publication, p.36

"Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God." Psalm 90:2

-The grand pyramid scheme

"God himself was once as we are now, and is an exalted man . I am going to tell you how God came to be God. We have imagined and supposed that God was God from all eternity. I will refute the idea. What did Jesus do? Why; I do the things I saw my Father do when worlds came rolling into existence. My Father worked out his kingdom with fear and trembling, and I must do the same; and when I get my kingdom, I shall present it to my Father.. He will then take a higher exaltation, and I will take his place, and thereby become exalted myself" Joseph Smith,Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, pp. 345-48).

“I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.” Isaiah 42:8

-Through hard work Jesus became a God

“He is the First born of the Father. By obedience and devotion to the truth he attained that pinnacle of intelligence whiched ranked him as a God, as the Lord Omnipotent, while yet in his pre existent state.” Bruce. R. McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, pg 129

-Jesus "advanced and progressed"

"God the second is the Redeemer, and his great, infinite, and eternal work is to ransom men from the temporal and spiritual death which was brought into the world by the fall of Adam. He is the Savior of the world, the Redeemer of men. He was the firstborn spirit child of the Eternal Father, and in that premortal life he advanced and progressed until he "was like unto God" (Abr. 3:24). He served under the Father, using Deity's power to create all things." Bruce R. McConkie, Sermons and Writings of Bruce R. McConkie , p.375

-Joseph Smith revealed this doctrine

"We all know that like begets like and that for the offspring to grow to the stature of his parent is a process infinitely repeated in nature. We can therefore understand that for a son of God to grow to the likeness of his Father in heaven is in harmony with natural law. We see this law demonstrated every few years in our own experience. Sons born to mortal fathers grow up to be like their fathers in the flesh. This is the way it will be with spirit sons of God. They will grow up to be like their Father in heaven. Joseph taught this obvious truth. As a matter of fact, he taught that through this process God himself attained perfection. From President Snow's understanding of the teachings of the Prophet on this doctrinal point, he coined the familiar couplet: "As man is, God once was; as God is, man may become." This teaching is peculiar to the restored gospel of Jesus Christ."
- Elder Marion G. Romney, General Conference, October 1964

-Christians worship a different Christ

"It is true that many of the Christian Churches worship a different Jesus than is worshipped by the Mormons or the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints." Bernard P. Brockbank, The Ensign, May 1977, pg. 26

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." John 1:1

"The thought has been expressed and accepted as a truth, that as we are now, God has been, and as God is now we may be; and if we admit this to be a truth—and I have no disposition to dispute it—then I repeat that even God our Heavenly Father has not reached the ultimatum of His greatness, His power, or His capacity, but that He is continually increasing and expanding in power, in dominion, in glory and in greatness, if I may be permitted to use such terms as these which some people who know no better would call blasphemous, in connection with the Supreme Being, the Father of us all." – Prophet Joseph F. Smith, Sustaining Each Other in the Gospel, Sunday, February 16, 1896.

Yet Pres. Gordon B. Hinckley in an interview with Larry King says he's not sure that we ever taught it...
