Adam is our God

For more than fifty years (1852-1912) the leaders of the LDS Church openly taught and sang hymns proclaiming that Adam was their God. (Rebuttals from LDS Church leaders follow these quotes, establishing the fact that they lie to the members.)

-Joseph Smith is a God

"Some may think that I have said concerning Adam strange, but the period will come when the people will be willing to adopt Joseph Smith as their Prophet, Seer, Revelator, and God! But not as not the father of their spirits, for that was our Father Adam." Brigham Young, School of the Prophets, Dec.11, 1869, Journal History of Brigham Young, pg.1813; also Journal of Wilford Woodruff, same date.

"You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe - and tremble." James 2:12

-Everybody's a God

"There is a sense, of course, in which Adam is a god. But so also, in the same sense, are Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; Moses and all the ancient prophets; Peter, James, and John; and all the righteous saints of all ages, including those of both high and low degree." Bruce R. McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, 2d ed., p.18

"Ye are my witnesses saith the Lord, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am He; before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me. I, even I, am the Lord; beside me there is no Savior." Isaiah 43:10-11

-Adam and his friends created the Earth

"which God revealed to me-namely that Adam is our father and God...Our Father Adam helped to make this earth, it was created expressly for him…." Why was Adam called Adam'? He was the first man on earth, and its framer and maker. He, with the help of his brethren brought it into existence. (Brigham Young, Desert News, June 18, 1873)

Thus saith the Lord(Yahweh), thy redeemer, and He that formed thee from the womb, I am the Lord that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth by myself." Isaiah 44:24

-Adam was a polygamist

"When our father Adam came into the garden of Eden, he came into it with a celestial body, and brought Eve, one of his wives, with him. He helped to make and organize this world. He is MICHAEL, the Archangel, the ANCIENT OF DAYS! about whom holy men have written and spoken--HE is our FATHER and our GOD, and the only God with whom WE have to do." The Latter-Day Saints' MILLENNIAL STAR, vol. XV, no. 48, Saturday, November 26, 1853, quoting from Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, Vol 1, pp.50,51

-Early Church leaders wrote hymns about it

There was a LDS hymn published in 1856 written by Eliza R. Snow entitled "We Believe in Our God", that stated:

We believe in our God,

the great Prince of His race,

The Archangel Michael,

the Ancient of Days,

Our own Father Adam,

earth's Lord, as is plain,

Who'll counsel,

and fight for his children again.

We believe in His Son,

Jesus Christ who, in love

to his brethren and sisters,

came down from above.

(Sacred Hymns for the Church of Jesus Christ of L.D.S., 11th 1856 English Ed.)

And another,

Sons of Michael, he approaches!

Rise th’ Eternal Father greet;

Bow, ye thousands, low before him;

Minister before his feet.

(Sacred Hymns for the Church of Jesus Christ of L.D.S., 20th ed. 1891 English Ed.)

-The hymn books teach the doctrines

This hymn book was published by Brigham Young, Parley P. Pratt, and John Taylor. Check out the Aug. 2005 Ensign. The Manchester Hymnal as it is commonly referred to was published from 1840-1912. This hymnal was produced while Joseph Smith was alive, the firat hymn was written by one of his plural wives."Every hymn, whether already a part of Latter-day Saint tradition or a proposed new hymn, was carefully considered. The doctrine expressed in each hymn was of prime consideration." Karen Lynn Davidson, Our Latter-day Hymns: The Stories and the Messages, p.3

-Adam was Jesus Father (reincarnation)

"Another meeting this evening. President B. Young taught that Adam was the father of Jesus and the only God to us. That he came to this world in a resurected [sic] body &c more hereafter." Diary of Hosea Stout, vol. 2, p. 435, April 9, 1852.

-Adam was space colonist

"Now hear it, O inhabitants of the earth, Jew and Gentile, Saint and sinner! When our father Adam came into the garden of Eden, he came into it with a celestial body, and brought Eve, one of his wives, with him. He helped to make and organize this world. He is MICHAEL, the Archangel, the ANCIENT OF DAYS! about whom holy men have written and spoken-HE is our FATHER and our GOD, and the only God with whom WE have to do. Every man upon the earth, professing Christians or non-professing, must hear it, and will know it sooner or later.

They came here, organized the raw material, and arranged in their order the herbs of the field, the trees, the apple, the peach, the plum, the pear, and every other fruit that is desirable and good for man; the seed was brought from another sphere, and planted in this earth. The thistle, and thorn, the brier, and the obnoxious weed did not appear until after the earth was cursed. When Adam and Eve had eaten of the forbidden fruit, their bodies became mortal from its effects, and therefore their offspring were mortal. When the Virgin Mary conceived the child Jesus, the Father had begotten him in his own likeness. He was not begotten by the Holy Ghost. And who is the Father? He is the first of the human family; and when he took a tabernacle, it was begotten by his Father in heaven, after the same manner as the tabernacles of Cain, Abel, and the rest of the sons and daughters of Adam and Eve; from the fruits of the earth, the first earthly tabernacles were originated by the Father, and so on in succession.

I could tell you much more about this; but were I to tell you the whole truth, blasphemy would be nothing to it, in the estimation of the superstitious and over-righteous of mankind. However, I have told you the truth as far as I have gone. I have heard men preach upon the divinity of Christ, and exhaust all the wisdom they possessed. All Scripturalists, and approved theologians who were considered exemplary for piety and education, have undertaken to expound on this subject, in every age of the Christian era; and after they have done all, they are obliged to conclude by exclaiming "great is the mystery of godliness," and tell nothing." Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, 26 vols., 1:, p.51

-The Prophet says the Bible is false

"Some of you may doubt the truth of what I now say, and argue that the Lord could teach him. This is a mistake. The Lord could not have taught him in any other way than in the way in which He did teach him. You believe Adam was made of the dust of this earth. This I do not believe, though it is supposed that it is so written in the Bible; but it is not, to my understanding. You can write that information to the States, if you please-that I have publicly declared that I do not believe that portion of the Bible as the Christian world do. I never did, and I never want to. What is the reason I do not? Because I have come to understanding, and banished from my mind all the baby stories my mother taught me when I was a child." Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, 26 vols., 2:, p.6 – 7

-Adam came from another planet

"But suppose Adam was made and fashioned the same as we make adobies; if he had never drunk of the bitter cup, the Lord might have talked to him to this day, and he would have continued as he was to all eternity, never advancing one particle in the school of intelligence. This idea opens up a field of light to the intelligent mind. How can you know truth but by its opposite, or light but by its opposite? The absence of light is darkness. How can sweetness be known but by its opposite, bitter? It is by this means that we obtain all intelligence. This is "Mormonism," and it is founded upon all truth, upon every principle of true philosophy; in fact the Gospel of Jesus Christ is the only true philosophy in existence. There is not one particle of it that is not strictly philosophical, though you and I may not understand all the fulness of it, but we will if we continue faithful."

Here let me state to all philosophers of every class upon the earth, When you tell me that father Adam was made as we make adobies from the earth, you tell me what I deem an idle tale. When you tell me that the beasts of the field were produced in that manner, you are speaking idle worlds devoid of meaning. There is no such thing in all the eternities where the Gods dwell. Mankind are here because they are the offspring of parents who were first brought here from another planet, and power was given them to propagate their species, and they were commanded to multiply and replenish the earth. The offspring of Adam and Eve are commanded to take the rude elements, and, by the knowledge God has given, to convert them into everything required for their life, health, adornment, wealth, comfort, and consolation. Have we the knowledge to do this? We have. Who gave us this knowledge? Our Father who made us; for he is the only wise God, and to him we owe allegiance; to him we owe our lives. He has brought us forth and taught us all we know. We are not indebted to any other power or God for all our great blessings." -Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, 26 vols., 7:, p.286

The doctrine was approved or endorsed by Henry Grow, D. B. Huntington & Joseph F. Smith." - S.L. School of Prophets minutes June 9,1873

-There is no "Creator"

"Adam is the father of our bodies. Who is to say he is not the father of our spirits. Pres. John Taylor Jan. 13, 1880

-Reincarnation; Adam was a "savior" on another world

All that father Adam did upon this earth, from the time that he took up his abode in the Garden of Eden, was done for his posterity's sake, and the success of his former mission as the savior of a world, and after wards, or now, as the father of a world only added to the glory which he already possessed. If, as the savior of a world, he had the power to lay down his life and take it up again, therefore, as the father of a world which is altogether an advanced condition, we necessarily conclude that the grave was powerless to hold him after that mission was completed." - Joseph E. Taylor Dec 29, 1888

"One are the human twain, as sheath and sword- Woman and man, the lady and the Lord; Each pair the Eve and Adam of some world, perchance unborn, or into space unhurled." - Orson F. Whitney 1914

-A Prophets statements can't be disputed

"HE is our FATHER and our GOD, and the only God with whom WE have to do. "The doctrine preached by President Young for a few years back wherein he says that Adam is our God-the God we worship-that most of the people believe it...Orson Pratt has said he does not believe it,...if the President makes a statement it is not our prerogative to dispute it...when I first heard the doctrine of Adam being our Father and God, I was favorably impressed- enjoyed and hailed it as a new Revelation- it appeared reasonable to me...that he should introduce us here." A.F. MacDonald, Minutes of the School of the Prophets, Provo, Utah, 1868-1871, p.38,39

-Space colonization explained (early LDS Church)

"Again from President Smith:I tell you, life did not commence upon this earth spontaneously. Its origin was not here. Life existed long before our solar system was called into being. The fact is, there never was a time when man-made in the image of God, male and female-did not exist. . . .

The Lord has given us the information regarding his creations, and how he has made many earths, for there never was a beginning, never was a time when man did not exist somewhere in the universe, and when the time came for this earth to be peopled, the Lord, our God, transplanted upon it from some other earth, the life which is found here. . . . The view expressed by President Smith finds support in a statement by Brigham Young, who said: "Shall I say that the seeds of vegetables were planted here by the Characters that framed and built this world-that the seeds of every plant composing the vegetable kingdom were brought from another world? This would be news to many of you. Who brought them here? It matters little to us whether it was John, James, William, Adam, or Bartholomew who brought them; but it was some Being who had power to frame this earth with its seas, valleys, mountains, and rivers and cause it to teem with vegetable and animal life. Here let me state to all philosophers of every class upon the earth, When you tell me that father Adam was made as we make adobies from the earth, you tell me what I deem an idle tale. When you tell me that the beasts of the field were produced in that manner, you are speaking idle words devoid of meaning. There is no such thing in all the eternities where the Gods dwell. Mankind are here because they are offspring of parents who were first brought here from another planet, and power was given them to propagate their species, and they are commanded to multiply and replenish the earth." Hyrum L. Andrus, Doctrinal Commentary on the Pearl of Great Price, p.181 Joseph Fielding Smith, Man: His Origin and Destiny, pp. 276-277.

-Space colonization explained (modern LDS Church)

"So to make any predictions, we must make certain assumptions. We shall build our creation theory on the accounts in Moses and Abraham. Remember that actual biological creation occurred only during the seventh period, when man was created and the Gods rested (Moses 3:5; Abraham 5; and D&C 77:12), and that there was no mention of the order in which biological creation took place, except that the man Adam (but not Eve) came first (Moses 3:7). Organisms were commanded to bring forth only after their own kind. How they were created is never mentioned, except that some were made from the dust of the earth. Since the record states that a garden was planted (Moses 3:8; Abraham 5:8), it is conceivable that seeds (in the broad sense, including spores or other reproductive structures) were brought to the earth, where they would use the "dust of the ground" to grow into mature plants-and in turn be consumed by animals that might have been brought to the earth from somewhere else (in embryonic form?). Based on these ideas, and assuming that the period of biological creation was long enough and conditions were such that fossils could be formed during creation (an assumption with which many might not be comfortable), there are at least two things that a creation theory might predict with respect to the fossil record:" Frank B. Salisbury, The Creation, p.223

-Eve was not made from Adam’s rib

"See Genesis 2:20-23. Eve was no more made from the literal rib of Adam than he was literally moulded from the ground. Mankind are procreated, not created." Rodney Turner, Woman and the Priesthood, p.64

-Who baptized Adam?

"And it came to pass, when the Lord had spoken with Adam, our father, that Adam cried unto the Lord, and he was caught away by the Spirit of the Lord, and was carried down into the water, and was laid under the water, and was brought forth out of the water. And thus he was baptized, and the Spirit of God descended upon him, and thus he was born of the Spirit, and became quickened in the inner man. And he heard a voice out of heaven, saying: Thou art baptized with fire, and with the Holy Ghost. This is the record of the Father, and the Son, from henceforth and forever;" Moses 6:64-66

-Adam will judge us

"In this scripture we receive the knowledge that Michael, who is Adam, not only stands at the head ruling over his posterity as a prince unto them forever; but also he has been appointed to hold the keys of salvation for the benefit of the people of all the world who will truly repent and receive the Gospel, and this great honor is bestowed upon him to act under the direction of Jesus Christ who is the Only Begotten Son of God and the Holy One of Israel. Therefore, all ye mockers and you mighty men take heed unto yourselves, for the day will come when you will have to face this first man who has been crowned with honor to stand next to Jesus Christ holding the keys of salvation; and you will not pass through the gates into that kingdom without his consent! When that day comes and if you are permitted to pass through those gates it will be only because you sorely repented and have humbly apologized to this great man whom you have so mercilessly maligned." Brigham Young, Joseph Fielding Smith, Man, His Origin and Destiny, p.337 - 338

-Prophet Joseph Smith

"The following teachings in regard to Adam are taken from the discourses and writings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, who was better prepared to speak than any other man since the days of Jesus Christ, on the life and authority of Adam. His knowledge was not obtained from books or the writings of the worldly wise of the present day. What he learned and revealed was given him by divine revelation.

The Prophet Joseph Smith had this to say about Adam and the Priesthood: The Priesthood was first given to Adam; he obtained the First Presidency, and held the keys of it from generation to generation. He obtained it in the Creation, before the world was formed, as in Genesis 1:26, 27, 28. He had dominion given him over every living creature. He is Michael the Archangel, spoken of in the scriptures. Then to Noah, who is Gabriel; he stands next in authority to Adam in the Priesthood; he was called of God to this office, and was the father of all living in his day, and to him was given the dominion. These men held keys first on earth, and then in heaven.

The Priesthood is an everlasting principle, and existed with God from eternity, and will to eternity, without beginning of days or end of years. The keys have to be brought from heaven whenever the Gospel is sent. When they are revealed from heaven, it is by Adam's authority." Joseph Fielding Smith, Man, His Origin and Destiny, p.338

 Rebuttals

Clearly the concept that Adam colonized earth and fathered Jesus is unique to Mormonism. Just as clearly this was an open doctrine of the early LDS Church. These rebuttals are examples of LDS Church leaders lying to modern members and the world at large.

"Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord:"  Prov 12:22

Ensign (The official magazine of the First Presidency of the LDS Church)

"I recall a tract some years ago written by a critic, an enemy of the Church whose desire was to undermine the faith of the weak and unknowing. The tract repeated fallacies that had been parroted for a century or more. It purported to set forth what you and I, as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, believe." Ensign, Aug. 2006, First Presidency Message

 Robert Millet

“We can teach the gospel with plainness and simplicity, focus on fundamentals, and emphasize what matters most. We do not tell all we know, nor do we teach on the edge of our knowledge.” Robert Millet, Getting at the Truth, pg.74

“If the general authorities do not teach something today, it is not part of our doctrine today. That does not, however, mean that a particular teaching is untrue. A teaching may be true and yet not a part of what is taught and emphasized by the Church today. In fact, if the Brethren do not teach it today, if it is not taught directly in the standard works, or if it is not found in our correlated curriculum, whether it is true or not may actually be irrevelant.” Robert Millet, Getting at the Truth, pg.66

“When emphasizing moments in LDS history of which we’re not particularly proud or cite statements that do not represent the doctrine of the Church; it is well to remember that these moments or statements are anomalies. They are unusual, atypical examples of Latter-Day Saint teaching or practices.” Robert Millet, Getting at the Truth, pg.60

Pres. Spencer W. Kimball

"We warn you against the dissemination of doctrines which are not according to the scriptures and which are alleged to have been taught by some of the General Authorities of past generations. Such, for instance is the Adam-God theory. We denounce that theory and hope that everyone will be cautioned against this and other kinds of false doctrines" Ensign, Nov. 1976, p. 77

 Pres. Joseph Fielding Smith

"SOURCE OF ADAM-GOD THEORY. President Brigham Young is quoted-in all probability the sermon was erroneously transcribed!-as having said: "Now hear it, O inhabitants of the earth, Jew and Gentile, saint and sinner! When our father Adam came into the Garden of Eden, he came into it with a celestial body, and brought Eve, one of his wives, with him. He helped to make and organize this world. He is Michael, the Archangel, the Ancient of Days, about whom holy men have written and spoken-He is our father and our God, and the only God with whom we have to do." Joseph Fielding Smith, Doctrines of Salvation, 3 vols., edited by Bruce R. McConkie, 1:, p.96

 Pres. Joseph Fielding Smith

"Men who harp upon this saying in the discourse of President Brigham Young should know just as well as they know anything-for it has come to their attention hundreds of times-that Brigham Young did not confuse Adam with Jesus Christ or the Father whom he worshiped." Joseph Fielding Smith, Doctrines of Salvation, 3 vols., edited by Bruce R. McConkie, 1:, p.100

 Pres. Joseph Fielding Smith

"RELATIONSHIP OF ELOHIM, JEHOVAH, AND MICHAEL. If the enemies of the Church who quote this wished to be honest, they could not help seeing that President Brigham Young definitely declares that Adam is Michael, the Archangel, the Ancient of Days, which indicates definitely that Adam is not Elohim, or the God whom we worship, who is the Father of Jesus Christ." Joseph Fielding Smith, Doctrines of Salvation, 3 vols., edited by Bruce R. McConkie, 1:, p.96

"I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed."  Gal 1:6-9

"For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect." Matt 24:24

"But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men." Matt 15:9

“Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. Abstain from all appearance of evil.”  I Thessalonians 5:22

My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.” Hosea 4:6
